Mercury Mountaineer Heater Core Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How do you remove and install the heater core in a Mercury Mountaineer?
A: Before proceeding, have the air conditioning system discharged by a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning shop. Disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and drain the cooling system. For the front heater core on 2003 and earlier V8 models, remove the engine trim cover. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core inlet and outlet pipes at the firewall, and disconnect the evaporator inlet and outlet lines. Remove the instrument panel. On 4WD models, disconnect the 4WD module. Disconnect the vacuum lines at the engine compartment firewall, remove the rubber seal, and push the vacuum lines into the passenger compartment. Lift the evaporator/heater core housing from the passenger compartment after removing its mounting bolts. Remove the insulating panel seal from around the heater core tubes and then remove the floor ducts from the housing. Next, remove the extension bracket, the heater core tube cover, and then the heater core cover itself. Carefully pull the heater core from the housing. For installation, simply reverse the removal process and reconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the firewall. Refill the cooling system and have the air conditioning system recharged and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.For the rear heater core, remove the rear upper trim panel, pillar trim panel, quarter panel tray, rear hatch/bumper guard, and the rear seat. Remove the rear quarter panel from the left side of the interior. Disconnect the evaporator/heater core housing electrical connectors and the vertical air duct from above the housing. Remove the evaporator/heater core housing mounting bolts and nuts. Raise the rear of the vehicle and support it on jack stands. From below the vehicle, disconnect the heater hoses and the air conditioning lines. Lower the vehicle and remove the evaporator/heater core housing from the rear. Proceed to remove the temperature blend door actuator, the air distribution blend door actuator, disconnect the hoses from the heater core, and then remove the heater core cover. Finally, remove the heater core from the housings. For installation, reverse the removal process, ensuring you reconnect the heater core inlet and outlet hoses at the firewall. Refill the cooling system once you're done and have the air conditioning system recharged and leak-tested by the shop that discharged it.
