Remove the axleshaft. Sheer the old oil seal off the end of the axle housing. On later models, it can be done with a large screwdriver or inner end of the axleshaft; if the seal removal tool is not available, prybar or end of the axle can be used to pop the seal out of the housing. Some of the early models may need the use of a special slide hammer puller or other equivalent tool. With the lips in an inward position, the metal face should be visible from one end of the axle housing; to install the seal, one can use large socket or a piece of pipe, of a diameter lesser than the od of the seal. On extending axle housing by new part or by machining operation, the face of the oil seal should project to the end surface of the new part or machined surface. Screw the ring of the seal with the gear oil gently and smooth all the lips of the seal. Installation of the axleshaft then takes place.
