Mercury Capri Wheel Seal

The Mercury Capri Wheel Seal helps to lock essential grease in the hub and bearing assembly while keeping rocks, dirt, and other road debris out. In each Mercury generation, the Wheel Seal encircles the lubricated bearing with a snug lip that prevents lubricant leakage so that heat and friction cannot build up. It also forms a barrier that stops other contaminants before they can penetrate the bearing and smooth the steering feel and prolong component life. Subsequent Capri editions are the same in principle but differ in material of the Wheel Seal as well as dimension, so that each axle can be press fitted without the need for adapters. All models in the Mercury product line are designed with a bearing that contains grease. The Wheel Seal prevents the grease from leaking. The owner has to take caution to check for cracks and seepage around the rim. If any are found, it is time for replacement. Due to the system being simple and proven, later Capri versions stayed with this single lip seal instead of switching to complicated multi piece units, the approval of which shows the original concept still meets the durability needs of Mercury enthusiasts. Routine inspection of any Capri Wheel Seal prevents overheating while maintaining secure handling.

Mercury Capri Wheel Seal Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the axleshaft and Wheel Seal on Mercury Capri?
    A:
Remove the axleshaft. Sheer the old oil seal off the end of the axle housing. On later models, it can be done with a large screwdriver or inner end of the axleshaft; if the seal removal tool is not available, prybar or end of the axle can be used to pop the seal out of the housing. Some of the early models may need the use of a special slide hammer puller or other equivalent tool. With the lips in an inward position, the metal face should be visible from one end of the axle housing; to install the seal, one can use large socket or a piece of pipe, of a diameter lesser than the od of the seal. On extending axle housing by new part or by machining operation, the face of the oil seal should project to the end surface of the new part or machined surface. Screw the ring of the seal with the gear oil gently and smooth all the lips of the seal. Installation of the axleshaft then takes place.
