It is recommended that new intermediate shaft fasteners be used once they have been removed. First, turn the front wheels to the straight ahead position. Next, using white paint, place alignment marks on the intermediate shaft-to-steering shaft and the lower flexible coupling-to-steering gear input shaft joints. Then, remove the upper clamp bolt and lower flexible coupling pinch bolt. After that, remove the steering gear-to-frame mounting bolts and lower the steering gear enough to allow for intermediate shaft removal. Pry the intermediate shaft off the steering gear input shaft with a large screwdriver, then pull the upper end of the shaft out of the steering column shaft. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring to align the marks and tighten the pinch bolts to the specified torque.
