Loosen the wire that connects the negative battery terminal. When working on a thumbwheel switch, push up on the dashboard panel first and remove the lens of the instrument cluster. Take out the lens retaining screws, disconnect the electrical connection, and pull out the switch. Installation follows the same sequence in reverse. To remove the switch with the detachable shaft, reach under the dash using both hands, press the release button at the switch's bottom, pull out the knob and shaft, take off the cluster bezel, unscrew the retaining nut, lower the switch and bracket, disconnect the electrical plug, and lift the switch free from the bracket. Put the switch onto the bracket as you wish, then tighten the nut. Next, put the knob and shaft onto the switch. Finally set it all up in the reverse way you took it apart. When you have a detachable knob type of switch, you can remove the knob easily by lifting the small tab under it with a pointed tool, pull off the switch bezel, take out the screws, lift the switch assembly out from the panel. Follow these steps to uninstall: remove connector, remove bolt, pull switch off the bracket. Installation is the opposite.
