The following models have a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), otherwise known as airbags, to protect the driver and a front seat passenger in case of an intersection frontal crash, included are an airbag module incorporated in the steering wheel, another airbag module situated in the instrument panel, and in some models, side and curtain shield airbags. Also, some of the vehicles have explosive devices known as seat belt pre-tensioners that tighten the belt upon collision. The front seat belt retractor for some models should not be unbolted when it has a pre-tensioner because problems arising from this can illuminate the SRS warning light leading to a visit to the dealer service department. The inflation chamber is contained within an inflator module, which is mounted within the steering wheel; the module houses both the cushion and inflator unit and when triggered by an electrical current fed through a spiral cable assembly the airbag is almost instantly inflated. The passenger side airbag, which is comparatively bigger than the steering wheel unit is located above the glove compartment and has trim cover which opens in the event of inflation. A blower and side passenger airbag is included in the front seats, and an SRS curtain shield airbag that deploys on the side during a side collision. The sensing and diagnostic module operates the airbag system during a crash and tests the system each time the vehicle is started; if operational, the "AIR BAG" light will this out but stays on or blinks if there is a problem which the dealer ought to address. Some models also contain pyrotechnic units in the seat belt retractor that work to tension the belts in a crash. Measures are not to tinker airbag near the SRS system, holding an airbag module with the opening facing the opposite to the body, not attempting to take resistance measurements of the SRS components, not using welding equipment on the car without first disconnecting the battery, and not to dispose of live air bag modules, but return them to a dealer instead.
