  • Q: How to remove and install the Variable Timing Sprocket on the camshaft in the DOHC four-cylinder engine of a Ford Ranger?
    A:
    To take off the camshaft sprockets, turn the timing chain out off place, and if it is engaged, then turn the camshaft alignment tool out off place. Screw a wrench on the hexagonal part of the camshaft to immobilise it as the other hand turns the camshaft sprocket bolt more especially at the part that splits into hexagonal after the second cam lobe from the front. Take off as well as tag all the camshaft sprockets so that they may be re-fixed accurately. For installation, put back the camshaft sprockets to their respective camshafts and loosely fit the sprocket bolts. If removed reinstall the left chain guide, then the timing chain, then the right chain guide. Maintain the tensioner and fasten it tightly to the torque setting after which you remove the pin to connect the chain guide. Torque the camshaft sprocket bolts, while holding the camshafts with another wrench, do not lean on the camshaft alignment tool as it might get damaged. Lastly the engine front cover can be provisionally fitted. On the crankshaft sprocket, the oil pump drive sprocket is incorporated and the crankshaft sprocket can be easily disconnected from the crankshaft once all the chains are removed, in this case the oil pump drive chain. The crankshaft sprocket also has two washers, and when changing them, it is recommended to use genuine factory parts to avoid severe damage to the engine.
