What is the general information about relays and their testing on Ford Mustang?

In the vehicle several electrical accessories for instance the fuel injection system, horns, starter and the fog lamps use relays to relay electrical signals to the component. A relay is assigned with a low current control circuit for opening or closing the high current power circuit; when a relay is faulty, the relevant component will have a problem. There are many relays; most of them are placed in the engine compartment fuse and relay box, and they may be situated in different positions depending on the year of manufacture. A suspected faulty relay can be withdrawn and be checked in order to ascertain that it actually has a problem. Faulty relays cannot be refurbished and the user has to replace them. Most of the used relays are ISO relays and these have marked terminals in terms of the circuit and function number. The control circuit is connected to the relay coil whereas the other terminals make a part of the power circuit. When energised, the coil produces a magnetic field that makes the larger contacts close to supply the power. Terminals 85 and 86 are a typical control circuit, but some connections are necessary if a diode or a resistor is installed. Battery voltage side of the circuit is joined to terminal 30 and the ground side is joined to terminal 87. For continuity check of the relay through the relay control coil an ohm meter is used and the continuity is checked in both forward and reverse polarities. If there is an infinite reading on both side of the relay then the relay should be changed. Continuity between the power circuit terminals should be tested with no continuity after the relay is disconnected, when de-energized. With the help of jumper wires the relay must click and for presence of continuity between terminals 30 and 87 jumper wires must be connected to the appropriate terminals and the battery. If any tests show that the relay failed, then the component has got to be substituted.

A suspected faulty relay can be withdrawn and be checked in order to ascertain that it actually has a problem. Faulty relays cannot be refurbished and the user has to replace them. Most of the used relays are ISO relays and these have marked terminals in terms of the circuit and function number. The control circuit is connected to the relay coil whereas the other terminals make a part of the power circuit. When energised, the coil produces a magnetic field that makes the larger contacts close to supply the power. Terminals 85 and 86 are a typical control circuit, but some connections are necessary if a diode or a resistor is installed. Battery voltage side of the circuit is joined to terminal 30 and the ground side is joined to terminal 87. For continuity check of the relay through the relay control coil an ohm meter is used and the continuity is checked in both forward and reverse polarities. If there is an infinite reading on both side of the relay then the relay should be changed. Continuity between the power circuit terminals should be tested with no continuity after the relay is disconnected, when de-energized. With the help of jumper wires the relay must click and for presence of continuity between terminals 30 and 87 jumper wires must be connected to the appropriate terminals and the battery. If any tests show that the relay failed, then the component has got to be substituted.
