On some models with the MTX 75 and MT285 transaxles, accessing the shift cables at the rear of the transaxle can be challenging, often requiring access from above; removing the air cleaner and auxiliary fusebox can enhance working space. Begin by disconnecting the negative battery cable, placing the gear lever in neutral, applying the parking brake, loosening the front wheel nuts, jacking up the front of the vehicle, and supporting it on axle stands before removing both wheels. Next, remove the engine undershield and the left-hand fenderwell liner, followed by the front section of the exhaust pipe, ensuring the flexible section is not overly bent. Lower the exhaust heat shield after removing the washer-type fasteners, then unclip the cover from the selector mechanism at the transaxle. Remove the cables from the support brackets by twisting the spring-loaded knurled collars and releasing the colored plastic clips that secure the cable adjusters, noting their installed locations before withdrawing the cables downwards from the engine compartment. Unclip and remove the shift lever trim panel, lift it upwards, and disconnect the switch wiring. Remove the center console, and for 2005 and later models, take off the lower heater case cover and duct. Disconnect the shift and selector inner cables from the gear lever by prying off the end fittings and release the cable casings from the floor brackets by twisting the collars. Remove the fasteners securing the heater air duct to the floor, then unscrew the fasteners securing the side cover panels between the center section of the dash panel and the floor, removing the panels. Fold back the carpet and insulation under the center part of the dash to access the selector cable floor grommet, remove the screws, and release the grommet from the floor. Pass the cables down through the vehicle floor and remove them from under the car. If necessary, the shift lever can be removed by unscrewing the mounting bolts, or the complete shift mechanism can be removed by unscrewing the four nuts. For installation, reverse the removal process, using new clips when reconnecting the shift cables and adjusting them accordingly.
