Ford Excursion A/C Compressor

The A/C Compressor of your Ford Excursion is the heart of the SUV climate system. It squeezes a low-pressure refrigerant into a hot high-pressure gas that begins the cooling cycle. The pump then pushes this gas towards the condenser, where heat escapes from the gas and this fluid cools down. The system then uses an evaporator fan to send the cold air through the vents. The A/C Compressor draws in the refrigerant in vapor form. It will avoid being starved of lubrication through the process. This keeps the cooling loop going. All Ford Excursion A/C Compressor run off the same core design throughout the run. However, there are two refrigerant families that are relevant. The early units came with R12 and the later ones with R134a. Therefore, matching oil and seals to the charge protects efficiency. A Ford Excursion A/C Compressor designed for R12 works with mineral oil. With the R134a version, you need a synthetic lubricant. Mixing the two will weaken effectiveness. If you own the full-size Ford SUV, you should confirm the model year and refrigerant tag before putting on a new A/C Compressor. This will help to keep the pressures steady and the vents cold. In doing so, your Ford Excursion will continue to provide reliable relaxation.

Ford Excursion A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove the A/C Compressor on the Ford Excursion?
    A:
To remove the air conditioning compressor, discharge the system and remove the drivebelt. For gasoline models, raise the vehicle, remove the right front wheel, release the clips on the lower fan shroud, and remove the fender splash shield if necessary. Disconnect the compressor lines, transmission fluid cooler lines (for automatic transmission), and electrical connectors. Remove the compressor mounting bolts and take out the compressor. For 7.3L diesel engines, disconnect the electrical connector and compressor lines, remove the old O-rings, and remove the compressor. For 6.0L and 6.4L engines, remove the transmission cooler, inner splash shield, disconnect the manifold and wiring, remove the compressor mounting bolts, and remove the compressor. If installing a new compressor, follow manufacturer's directions and transfer the clutch if needed. Replace manifold O-rings and lubricate with refrigerant oil. Installation is the reverse. Replace the orifice tube and have the system serviced by a professional.
