Ford Crown Victoria Turn Signal Switch

Using the column-mounted lever on a Ford Crown Victoria Turn Signal Switch activates both the right and left turn signal lights. The early Crown Victoria models applied a simple Turn Signal Switch that was designed to blink the corner lamps. Meanwhile, later editions from Ford adopted a multifunction Turn Signal Switch that had more functionality. The one on the left has clicking ability for headlight, fog light, wiper, and cruise as well via little dials built into the stalk. Regardless of style, engaging the switch completes an electrical connection that causes either the left or right indicator to pulse, warning other motorists and enhancing safety in darkness or heavy traffic. Each Turn Signal Switch goes through thousands of on-off cycles while driving. When the switch is returned to center, internal springs break the circuit so the lamps extinguish. The wiring of the Turn Signal Switch in the Ford OEM is wired as per the schematics. Choosing a replacement requires matching the unit to the specific Crown Victoria production year so connector pins and mounting points align with the steering column housing. Due to a faulty switch causing the blinkers to stop working, drivers depend on a strong Ford assembly as the unit leaves the Crown Victoria vulnerable to collisions and citations.

Ford Crown Victoria Turn Signal Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to disconnect and reconnect the Turn Signal Switch on the Ford Crown Victoria?
    A:
Pull the cable off the negative battery terminal. For 1989 and earlier models, restrain the switch lever firmly and rotate it counterclockwise and then take it out by pulling in up direction. To reach this Turn Signal Switch, one needs to first take off the steering column covers, then take off the switch cover to unplug the connector thus removing the retaining screws, this is followed by withdrawal of the switch assembly from the steering column. After that, position the switch into its place, add the screws and the electrical connector before fixing the steering column covers. Align the tangs of the brake lever with the slot in the Turn Signal Switch and then simply insert straight into the position. On 1990 and later models, to get to the interior, the steering column covers have to be removed; on most models, the Ignition Lock Cylinder needs to be taken out before the covers, and on the models that have the tilt-column steering, the tilt lever needs to be removed in order for the covers to be taken off. Two retain screws should be unscrewed and then the Turn Signal Switch should be pulled out; a connector should be disconnected as well as the switch assembly should be detached from the steering column. Screw the connector in the electrical outlet, fit the Turn Signal Switch in the hole of the steering column, finally screw the screws. Last but not the least; bolt on the steering column covers, lock cylinder and the tilt lever if standard. Screw the cable on the negative terminal of the battery.
