2008 Ford Focus Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How should the oil pump be removed, inspected, and installed in 2.3L and 2.0L engine on 2008 Ford Focus?
A: Although in theory one can do this task with the engine still in the car, the procedure entails such a vast amount of disassembly that it is suggested the engine be removed from the car to facilitate the effort. First, take away the timing chain and the oil pan; next, take of the two bolts that fasten the oil pump pick-up pipe to the pump, and do away with the O-ring/gasket. Second, set the oil pump chain aside and then undo the oil pump chain guide and tensioner, to pull the oil pump drive sprocket to stop it rotating as the retaining bolt is undone. Next, release the oil pump sprocket as well as the oil pump drive chain, then, dismantle the pump from the cylinder block/crankcase and eliminate the support gasket. It is a good practice at this juncture if there remains any sort of uncertainty about the ability of the oil pump to work, to install a new pump assembly. During installation clean and de-grease all items so that there should not be any harm to the mating surfaces. Bathe the oil pump with fresh engine oil and spin it prior to installation of a new gasket before bolting the pump to the cylinder block/crankcase with the required torque. Ensure that there is an O-ring/gasket in the correct position on the pump pick-up pipe then tighten the bolts of the O-ring/gasket firmly. Attach the oil pump drive chain and sprocket in place which has to be aligned, screw on the sprocket while holding the hexagonal part of the sprocket so that it does not rotate while tightening. Last of all is the oil pump chain tensioner and guide to be fitted before the timing chain as well as the oil pan.
