2001 Ford Ranger Oil Pump Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the engine and oil pump in 4.0L pushrod V6 engine on 2001 Ford Ranger?
A: To do this, you must first, of course, dismantle the oil pan and second, after that, remove the bolts that are fastened on the oil pump and separate the pump from the engine. Whenever pulling out the oil pump intermediate drive shaft, one should look at the ends of the shaft which are of different shapes and the position of the retainer ring with regard to the shaft. If required remove the inlet tube and the screen from the unit by unlocking them from the pump. For assembly, pour a little clean engine oil in one of the pump ports and then turn the pump in the anticlockwise direction in order to charge the pump. If the oil pump pick-up tube was removed be sure to put it back on the pump with a new gasket and be sure that the screen is clean. Place the forked end of the intermediate drive shaft into the opening on the engine block followed by the fitting of the oil pump to the block using bolts which should be tightened to the recommended torque. The rest that remains will follow its removal process in the opposite order. After the installation is done, the engine should be started and the oil pressure indicator should rise to normal as soon as possible; if this does not happen, the engine should be stopped, because low oil pressure can cause great damage.
