2001 Ford Ranger Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the rear axle shaft on 2001 Ford Ranger?
A: Relax the bolts on the back wheels and then lift the back of the car using the jack then place it on jackstands and then remove the back wheels. Take out the axleshafts, locate and undo the hardware that secures the brake line junction block to the axle housing and pry off the brake lines from their clip that is fitted at the axle housing. Disconnect the harness behind the rear anti-lock and release it from the sensor on the axle housing and then remove the rear brake drums. Fourth, undo the nuts and bolts holding the brake backing plate on the axle, then, while supporting it on a wire, prise the backing plate away from the axle housing and then, using wire, suspend the backing plates well out of the way. Remove the crimp-type clamp and replace it with a screw-type clamp and then disconnect the vent hose from the axle housing. Position a transmission jack underneath the axle housing and then fasten it with a safety belt or chain so as to facilitate the tilting of the axle for removal. Loosen and take off the U-bolt nuts that locks the shock mounting bracket on the axle but don't disconnect the shock absorber from the bracket, then bring down the bracket off the spring and remove the U-bolts. Removed the stabilizer bar bracket bolts from the axle housing and shift the stabilizer bar aside. Jack up the axle off the spring now, pivot it to the right until the left end of the axle shaft is off the spring. Slop the driver side of the axle housing down, lower the axle, swing it towards the driver side and take it off from beneath the vehicle. The removal process is the reverse of installation with a lot of attention paid to blanching and tightening of all fasteners especially wheel lug nuts to the required torque.
