1995 Ford Explorer Oil Pan Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the oil pan assembly and crankcase reinforcement section in 4.0L SOHC V6 engine on 1995 Ford Explorer?
A: The crankcase is made up of an oil sump that is a lower sheet metal oil pan, and an upper aluminum casting. The lower oil pan can be removed with the engine in the car while the oil pump pick-up/screen can also be removed with the emperor in the car but the reinforcement section must have the engine removed in order to expose the oil pump and crank shaft. However, in order to remove the reinforcement section the engine can be raised, at least 1 inch and in this process various components must be removed and support from above is required. The crankcase reinforcement, of course, has to be detached with the engine removed and the oil taken out and the fasteners of the lower oil pan have to be unscrewed. The oil pump pickup/screen is removed next; for 2001 and the models thereafter, the transmission cooler brackets are also removed. It progresses from the unbolting of bolts which fasten the reinforcement section and this has to be done cautiously in a way that would not harm the gasket surfaces. In case of installation it is necessary to remove the old gasket material; any spacer should be examined to prevent oil leaks. Holes for threaded inserts in the reinforcement section are drilled; RTV sealant is dispensed to particular areas. New gaskets are laid down, and then plate reinforcement section is also fitted but it is not given locking at first. Spacing of decks between the mounting surfaces are checked and if required shimmed and all the bolts for mounting are tightened to a specified torque. Last of all, the oil pump pick up tube and the oil pan are replaced and a new gasket is placed and all the bolts are tightened.
