1988 Ford Bronco Axle Shaft Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the front axle shaft assembly on a 1988 Ford Bronco?
A: Crank the front of the car up and keep it stable while you put jack stands under the radius arm brackets. Put the wheels aside. Hang up the brake calipers on the frame to keep them safe and stop the hose from getting damaged. When your Bronco has four-wheel ABS brakes, take off the sensor wire connections from the wheel hubs. Take off the stabilizer bar from the brackets holding the axle housing, and remove the locking bolts from the steering tie rods on the knuckles. To maintain proper alignment of the spring units, move all these components off the coil spring models: shock absorbers, coil springs, retainers, insulators, and seats; while leaf spring models require removing the U-bolts from the axle housing assemblies. Pry the radius arms off the axle housing on cars with coil springs. First, pull off the vent tube at the differential housing and discard the hose clamps. After that, take off the vent fitting and insert a new 1/8-inch pipe plug to keep debris out. Pull the driveshaft out from its connection with the front driveline flange. Then hang the front driveshaft up somewhere, securing the joint caps that keep the universal assembly in place. Slide a floor jack under the right axle's arm assembly, take off the boot clamps that attach the axle shaft to the stub axle, and move the boot over the stub axle. Only remove the bolt holding the right-hand axle arm assembly to the crossmember while keeping the axle properly held up. Take both wheels off by lowering then guiding the entire axle out until the right-side axle's pieces disconnect from the body's special middle equipment. Find a spot at the bottom of the differential where a floor jack can balance. Loosen the bolt holding the left-hand axle against the crossmember, then support the axle well before detaching it from underneath the car. Following the removal steps backwards and tightening all bolts to their correct torque is the installation process. An alignment technician needs to check caster and camber after you finish putting the front axle back together.
