- Q: How can broken valve springs and defective valve stem seals be replaced without removing the cylinder heads in 3.8L V6 and V8 engine on 1986 Mercury Capri?A: Defective valve stem seals and broken valve springs can be repaired without the removal of the cylinder heads-two special tools and a compressed air source are required. A length of nylon rope must be used if compressed air cannot be supplied in order to stop the valves from falling into the cylinder. Start by pulling off the rocker arm cover of the cylinder head that has the problem and, if all the valve stems are to be sealed, the other cover as well. Next, remove the spark plug from the cylinder with a defective part and if changing all seals remove all spark plugs.
