When examining the bearing shells, they should be removed from the cylinder block/crankcase and main bearing caps, as well as from the connecting rods and caps. They should then be laid out on a clean surface in the same general position as their location in the engine to match any bearing problems with the corresponding crankshaft journal. It is important not to touch any shell's bearing surface with fingers to avoid scratching the delicate surface.
