    Q:
How to install piston and connecting rod assemblies on Mercury Grand Marquis? Posted by Customer
    A:
It is important that prior to the fitting of piston and its respective connecting rod, the cylinder walls should be of superb state of cleanliness and the top edge of each cylinder should be chamfered and the crankshaft should be fitted in place. Nuts and washers are to be taken off the first connecting rod, and from the marks made while doing so, the cap is to be removed; cleaning the bearing surfaces of the connecting rod with a lint-free material. The new upper bearing insert has to be press fitted into the connecting rod with its bearing tab being located in the respective recess without resorting to the use of lubrication. Do the same for the rod cap but ensure that you make sure that you are clean. Allign the piston ring gap on piston and for 5.0L engine put the hose over each of the connecting rod bolt. Coat the piston along with the rings with fresh engine oil, fit the piston ring compressor, and then drop the piston into the cylinder with the skirt just proud. Take the crankshaft and align the bottom end of the number one connecting rod journal and lubricate the cylinder bore. Put the piston/connecting rod assembly in the cylinder bore so that the notches of the piston face the front side of the engine and very lightly hit the ring compressor on the block. Lightly knock the piston into place with the wooden hammer handle while holding the connecting rod over the crankshaft journal and ensuring that any force used does not conform the piston or rings. After the installation of the connecting rod, the bearing oil clearance should be checked with Plastigage and the crushed width must be compared with the scale. Scrub with a cloth any Plastigage that remains on the rod journal and the bearing face, then cover the journal with a layer of moly-base grease or engine assembly lube, replace the connecting rod and its cap, and tighten the nuts or bolts to the required degree of twist. The same procedure will be followed until all the pistons and connecting rods will be set; the bearing inserts as well as the connecting rods must be clean, the assembly order must match the cylinder, the cylinder walls, and the bearing faces will be lubricated. Once all the assemblies are fitted, turn the crankshaft by hand and make sure that it does not bind; then check the connecting rod small end clearance to specifications and correct the difference by reboring the rods.
