    Q:
What is the purpose and functionality of the Supplemental Restraint System and Air Bag on Lincoln Navigator? Posted by Customer
    A:
Automatic transmission is standard equipment as are power steering, power windows, central locking, electronic air conditioning, and a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) or airbag which is fitted to protect the driver and front seat passenger head-on or in a frontal Crash. The components of this system are an air bag module fixed at the centre of the steering wheel and right side of the instrument panel, two crash sensors affixed at the front of the vehicle and diagnostic module that contains a sating sensor fixed inside the passenger's cabin. The instrument is located in the steering wheel and comprises cushion and inflator unit where in, through an electrical impulse the bag inflates almost simultaneously where by the coil assembly connected to the steering column irrespective of its position transmits the impulse. This unit is larger than the steering wheel air bag, and is sited above the glove compartment and comprises of the inflator, bag assembly, reaction housing and trim cover. Tasler side-impact airbags found in the upper/outboard areas of the front seats with impact sensors mostly fitted to the front doors. In the later models an accessory rear side-impact airbag system-side-torso airbags that deploy from behind the headliner for the rear seat occupants protection. The system features three sensors: two forward crash sensors and a sating sensor in the airbag diagnostic module, the last of which is part of the airbag and creates an electrical circuit during a sufficient impact. The monitor provides current to the airbag during a crash, tests the system on start-up of the vehicle and illuminates the AIR BAG lighting should there be a fault in the system. While operating in the area of the steering wheel or air bags the ignition switch must be turned off, battery cables disconnected for at least two minutes till the electronic module backup power is exhausted. To charge the system the ignition switch should be off, to start the process one should connect the positive terminal of the battery before linking the negative terminal.
