Thread a long bolt into the camshaft to pull it from the block and provide leverage to support the cam so the lobes don't get nicked or gouged on the bearings as it's withdrawn.

Remove the timing chains, camshaft sprockets, and spacers.

Install the camshaft bearing caps in their original locations and tighten the bolts in sequence to the specified torque.

After measuring the cam lobe lift, record the figure for future reference, reposition the piston at TDC on the compression stroke, and repeat the check for each valve, ensuring to work from cylinder to cylinder following the firing order sequence.

Visually examine the cam lobes and bearing journals for score marks, pitting, galling, and evidence of overheating. Measure the diameter of each camshaft journal and the lift of each camshaft lobe using a micrometer. If any measurement is less than specified, replace the camshaft. Check the oil clearance for each camshaft journal using Plastigage. If the clearance is greater than specified, and the diameter of any journal is less than specified, replace the camshaft. Scrape off the Plastigage without scratching the journals or bearing surfaces. Check the timing chain tensioner oil feed tube and reservoir for cleanliness before installing the cam caps.

Mark the camshaft cap clusters with a front and rear indication, for both the left and right cylinder heads. Note that two bolts used on one of the camshaft cap clusters are different than the others.
