    Q:
How to service the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve, valve seats, and valve guides on Lincoln Continental? Posted by Customer
    A:
Due to the intricate nature of the task and the high cost of the necessary special tools and equipment, servicing of the valves, valve seats, and valve guides, often referred to as a valve job, is typically more conveniently and affordably carried out by an automotive machine shop. A home mechanic can remove and disassemble the head, perform the initial cleaning and inspection, then reassemble and deliver it to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop for the actual service work. This inspection allows the mechanic to assess the condition of the head and valve train components and to understand what work and new parts are needed when interacting with an automotive machine shop. The dealer service department or automotive machine shop will then remove the valves and springs, recondition or replace the valves and valve seats, recondition the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers or rotators and keepers (if necessary), replace the valve seals with new ones, reassemble the valve components and ensure the installed spring height, and pressure, is correct. The cylinder head gasket surface will also be resurfaced if it's warped, if not beyond service limits. It may be wise to have the cylinder head pressure checked for internal coolant leaks, particularly if the engine has overheated. After the valve job, the head will be in a condition similar to new. When the head is returned, it should be cleaned again before installation on the engine to remove any remaining metal particles and abrasive grit from the valve service or head resurfacing operations. Compressed air can be used to blow out all the oil holes and passages.

    Q:
Should a professional service the exhaust valve and intake valve, along with their seats and guides, on the Mercury Capri? Posted by Customer
    A:
As seen, because of the nature of the job and the tools that needs to be used, the process of working on the valve, valve seats and the valve guides that is often referred to as valve job, should only be done by a professional. With the head removed and dismantled, a home mechanic is in a position to provide initial washing and inspection of the part before reassembling it for delivering to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop for the actual work to be done on the head. Carrying out the inspection makes it possible to get an understanding of the state of head and valve train parts thus; knowing the work required and new parts when dealing with an automotive machine shops. For the specific services described below, responsibility will lie with the dealer service department or automotive machine shop: valve removal, valve or spring reconditioning or replacement, checking and replacing valve guides, valve spring, spring retainer, rotator or keepers as necessary, replacing valve seals, reassembling valves, and verifying the accuracy of the installed spring height, among others. Also, if the surface of the cylinder head gasket is uneven, this will also be machined. After the valve job is done the head will be smooth as new, after this another washing may be done to remove the remaining metal particles and abrasive grit that may be remaining following the head machining or the valve service. It is also blown through all oil holes and passages using compressed air.

    Q:
What steps can a home mechanic take regarding the Exhaust Valve and Intake Valve before delivering the head for servicing on a Ford Thunderbird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Because of the complex nature of the job and the special tools and equipment needed, servicing of the valves, valve seats, and valve guides, commonly known as a valve job, is best left to a shop. The home mechanic can remove and disassemble the head, perform the initial cleaning and inspection, then reassemble and deliver the head to a dealer service department or an automotive machine shop for the actual valve servicing. The dealer service department or automotive machine shop will remove the valves and springs, recondition or replace the valves and valve seats, recondition the valve guides, check and replace the valve springs, spring retainers or rotators, and keepers as necessary, replace the valve seals with new ones, reassemble the valve components, and ensure the installed spring height is correct. The cylinder head gasket surface will also be resurfaced if it is warped. After the valve job has been performed by a shop, the head will be in like-new condition. When the head is returned, it is important to clean it again before installation on the engine to remove any metal particles and abrasive grit that may still be present from the valve service or head resurfacing operations, using compressed air if available to blow out all the oil holes and passages.
