For fuel economy purposes designers make adjustments to air/fuel ratios in cruise mode. When people mix lean, the combustion temperatures become high and generate pollutants like NOx. To control NOx during lean cruise modes, the EGR system reintroduces small quantities of exhaust gas into the intake manifold. It is the EGR valve that joins the exhaust system to the intake manifold, which is controlled by a vacuum-activated diaphragm. The F-series and Bronco vehicles have three different types of EGR systems, conventional ported vacuum, integral backpressure valve, and Electronic EGR (EEGR) system. The early non-U.S models used ported vacuum valves while early U.S carbureted models used integral backpressure valves.

The EGR system reduces NOx emissions by recirculating exhaust gases into the intake manifold, with the flow rate given by the Differential Pressure Feedback (DPFE) system. This system includes the EGR valve, vacuum regulator, DPFE sensor, PCM, EGR pipe, and vacuum and pressure lines. Issues can be diagnosed using trouble codes. Excessive flow causes rough running or stalling and insufficient flow leads to high combustion temperatures.

Common issues that may require troubleshooting in the emission control system include driveability issues, failed smog certifications, or illuminated indicator lights.

To replace the EGR valve, you need to follow these steps:1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.2. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube.3. Disconnect the EGR valve vacuum hose.4. Disconnect the EGR exhaust manifold tube.5. Remove the EGR valve from the intake manifold.6. Clean the gasket surfaces.7. Install the new valve.

The process for replacing the EGR tube is as follows: a) Prior to removal, remove the EGR valve. b) Disconnect the EGR tube fittings. c) Remove the tube. d) Reinstall the tube.

The EVR can be tested for voltage and resistance, and the DPFE sensor can be checked for signal voltage. Additionally, the EGR valve, EGR vacuum regulator, and DPFE sensor can be removed and replaced following the appropriate steps if necessary for component replacement.

To perform maintenance on the EVP sensor, located on the EGR valve, unplug the electrical connector, remove the three mounting bolts, and detach the sensor. Ensure to use a new O-ring during installation.

Checks for ported valves, integral back pressure transducer valve, and electronic EGR valves involve vacuum testing, leakage tests, functional tests, and resistance measurements.
