    Q:
How to check and replace the Neutral Safety Switch on the transmission range sensor of a Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
With the ignition key Off, remove the electrical connector from the transmission range sensor, ensuring to disconnect it by hand without using tools. Examine the connector socket on the sensor for any loose, corroded, or bent pins using a small mirror. Major testing of the transmission range sensor and harness typically requires a scan tool, but basic continuity can be checked between some terminals on the sensor with an ohmmeter or continuity tester. Check for continuity between the indicated terminals at the sensor with the connector disconnected: there should be continuity between terminals 1 and 4 in Park or Neutral, between terminals 5 and 8 in Neutral, and between terminals 2 and 3 in Reverse. If any tests fail, replace the transmission range sensor, and further testing should be performed with a scan tool. To replace the sensor, disconnect the negative cable from the battery, shift the transmission into Neutral, and securely raise the front of the vehicle on jack stands, ensuring the air suspension switch is turned OFF if equipped with Automatic Ride Control. Remove the shift cable from the shift lever and cable bracket, make a mark on the transmission shift lever relative to its position in Neutral, then remove the nut and take off the shift lever. Disconnect the electrical connector from the transmission range sensor, remove the bolts, and detach the sensor. Before installing the new sensor, ensure the transmission is in Neutral, align the flats on the switch with the flats in the shaft, and position the sensor onto the shaft. Install the bolts finger-tight; precise adjustment requires a special tool, but if unavailable, connect the electrical sensor, reconnect the negative battery cable, turn the ignition key On, shift into Reverse, rotate the sensor until the back-up lights come on, and then tighten the mounting bolts. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal, using a new nut for the shift lever. Finally, apply the parking brake and verify that the engine starts only in Neutral or Park.

    Q:
How to remove and install the Neutral Safety Switch on the shift range selector of a Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the shift range selector switch, initially, remove the knob from the switch and disconnect the electrical connection. Then, the two mounting screws are unscrewed and one can take the switch out of the dash. For its installation, the process should be done in the reverse of what has been listed above for its removal. Further, you have to use a screwdriver or panel tool to remove the switch from the instrument panel, to remove the second connector and to take out the switch. Last, after the scanning is done, reverse the steps you have done in the removal section.

    Q:
How to replace the Neutral Safety Switch on the Ford F-150? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure is specific to the DTR sensors used on 4R7DE and 4R75E transmissions and does not apply to the TR sensor on 6R80 transmissions, which is an integral component of the valve body and cannot be serviced at home. The DTR sensor is located on the left side of the transmission. If replacing the DTR sensor or removing it to replace the transmission, a special alignment tool (307-351) is required. Begin by putting the shift lever in Neutral and disconnecting the negative battery terminal. Raise the vehicle securely on jackstands. For some 4WD models, it may be necessary to remove or disconnect the front driveshaft. Disconnect the shift control cable from the manual control lever and the electrical connector from the DTR sensor. Remove the manual control lever nut and the lever itself. If reinstalling the same DTR sensor, mark its relationship to the transmission case; if replacing it, the special tool is necessary for proper alignment. Remove the DTR sensor mounting bolts and the sensor, ensuring the manual selector shaft remains in the Neutral position. If the selector shaft has been moved, return it to Neutral by rotating it through the gears and then counterclockwise three detent positions. Before installing the DTR sensor, align the Neutral marks on both parts of the sensor. Install the DTR sensor on the manual selector shaft and loosely install the mounting bolts. For the old sensor, align the previously made marks while tightening the bolts securely; for a new sensor, use the alignment tool before tightening the bolts. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.

    Q:
How to replace and adjust the Neutral Safety Switch in the Ford Ranger with an automatic transmission? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure is for later model vehicles with automatic transmission. It is intended for home mechanics without access to special alignment tools. Disconnect the battery, place the shift lever in neutral, raise the vehicle, locate and disconnect the DTR sensor, remove the manual lever, mark the relationship of the DTR sensor, remove the sensor, align the neutral marks, slide the sensor onto the lever shaft, tighten the bolts, and recheck alignment. Drive to a dealer if necessary.
