    Q:
How to remove and replace a fuel pump in a Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
Sucking up fuel remaining in the tank is wise before taking out the fuel pump, unless you've driven enough to empty everything settled in the tank. Relieve the fuel pressure. Take off thewire from the negative endof the battery cable. Put the car on jackstands, lift it up, and make sure it stays safe. Remove the fuel tank from the vehicle. To disconnect the fuel lines from the pump, a fuel pump line removal tool from regular auto parts stores is needed. Use colored paint or a permanent marker to mark the alignment marks stenciled on both the fuel pump and fuel tank for easy installation later. Take out the screws holding the fuel pump unit to its place. For Expedition/Navigator models, remove the fuel pump assembly by unscrewing its threaded holder; use channel locks or the special tool from auto parts stores to do this. Carefully remove the fuel pump unit from the tank by pulling gently while angling it out to keep from harming the fuel filter. Remove the old seal ring and discard it. When you intend to put back the factory fuel pump, pull off the strainer with your screwdriver, wash it with cleaning liquid, and set it back onto the pump. When you buy a complete fuel pump unit with a new strainer, the package includes a fresh strainer as part of the installation. To take out the fuel pump from the unit, free it from the clamp and disconnect the wiring plug attached to the pump. Remove the fuel pump mounting clamp bolt. Buff the fuel pump and tank flange, then clean both the surfaces around the seal area. You put the new seal ring on by painting its inside part with a thick grease layer to hold it in place until you stand up the engine part.
