    Q:
How to remove and install the Transfer Case Seal on the Ford Edge? Posted by Customer
    A:
Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then drain the transfer case lubricant. Remove the driveshaft and mark the relative positions of the pinion, nut, and flange. Use a beam- or dial-type inch-pound torque wrench to determine the torque required to rotate the pinion while the vehicle is in Neutral, and record it for later use. Count the number of threads visible between the end of the nut and the end of the pinion shaft, recording that as well. Remove the flange mounting nut using a two-pin spanner to hold the pinion flange while loosening the locknut, then take off the companion flange with a puller that can attach to the flange's driveshaft bolt holes. Pry out the seal carefully with a screwdriver or seal removal tool, ensuring not to damage the seal bore, and then remove the seal deflector and the pinion seal using a seal-puller. After removing the seal, take out the collapsible bearing spacer and install a new one. Lubricate the lips of the new seal with multi-purpose grease and tap it evenly into position with a seal installation tool or a large socket, ensuring it enters the housing squarely and is fully seated. Align the mating marks made before disassembly and install the companion flange, tightening the pinion nut if necessary to draw the flange into place. Carefully tighten the new nut until the original number of threads are exposed and the marks are aligned, then measure the torque required to rotate the pinion, tightening the nut in small increments until it matches the previously recorded figure. If the original torque reading is exceeded by more than 3 in-lbs, the assembly will need to be disassembled again to install a new collapsible spacer. Finally, connect the driveshaft, add the specified lubricant to the transfer case, and lower the vehicle, ensuring that all driveshaft flange and support bearing bolts are replaced with new fasteners.

    Q:
How to replace the Transfer Case Seal and companion flange on Ford Taurus? Posted by Customer
    A:
Place the car on jackstands and keep it safe by supporting it. Lift the vehicle and hold it safe on jack supports. Get rid of and hold the connection between the exhaust pipe and the "y" pipe. First, locate where the driveshaft connects to your vehicle, take note of everything, and take out the driveshaft. With the auto in neutral, take readings by turning the pinion. Note the results. On the pinion shaft, count how many threads you can see between the nut and end of shaft. Note it down for future work. To free the pinion flange, have a two-pin spanner hold it while you loosen the lock nut. Get the companion flange out by tightening a puller's cente bolt and pressing it off the shaft, if needed. Gently take the seal off using either a screwdriver or seal removal tool with care, while keeping the seal bore safe from damage. Change the old collapsible bearing spacer and put in a fresh one. Put the deflector in place, coat the new seal lips with multi-purpose grease, tap it in gently with either a seal installer or a deep socket, and check that it is seated right. Put the mating marks in order and attach the flange to the output shaft. Put on a fresh nut. Twist the new nut by hand until you can see the same number of threads as before. Slowly turn the nut while keeping track of the final rotational torque. Stop when the recorded reading appears, but make no more than 3 in-lbs of additional torque, since going beyond original limits demands spacer replacement. Rephrase the mating marks on the flange before attaching the driveshaft. Also refill any transfer case fluid when you're done. You must replace all driveshaft connection and holding bolts with fresh fasteners.
