How to replace universal joints in a driveshaft on Ford Crown Victoria? Posted by Customer
    A:
A press or large vise will be required for this procedure. It may be advisable to take the driveshaft to a local dealer service department, service station or machine shop where the universal joints can be replaced for you, normally at a reasonable charge. Remove the driveshaft as outlined previously. Using a small pair of pliers, remove the snap-rings from the spider. A pair of needle-nose pliers can be used to remove the universal joint snap-rings. Supporting the driveshaft, place it in position on a workbench equipped with a vise. Place a piece of pipe or a large socket with the same inside diameter over one of the bearing caps. Position a socket which is of slightly smaller diameter than the cap on the opposite bearing cap. To press the universal joint out of the driveshaft yoke, set it up in a vise with the small socket pushing the joint and bearing cap into the large socket. Use the vise or press to force the cap out, stopping just before it comes completely out of the yoke. Use the vise or large pliers to work the cap the rest of the way out. Transfer the sockets to the other side and press the opposite bearing cap out in the same manner. Pack the new universal joint bearings with grease. Ordinarily, specific instructions for lubrication will be included with the universal joint servicing kit and should be followed carefully. Position the spider in the yoke and partially install one bearing cap in the yoke. Start the spider into the bearing cap and then partially install the other cap. Align the spider and press the bearing caps into position, being careful not to damage the dust seals. Install the snap-rings. If difficulty is encountered in seating the snap-rings, strike the driveshaft yoke sharply with a hammer. This will spring the yoke ears slightly and allow the snap-rings to seat in the groove. If the snap-ring will not seat in the groove, strike the yoke with a brass hammer - this will relieve the tension that has set up in the yoke, and slightly spring the yoke ears. This should also be done if the joint feels tight when assembled. Install the grease fitting and fill the joint with grease. Be careful not to overfill the joint, as this could blow out the grease seals. Install the driveshaft, tightening the companion flange bolts to the torque specifications.

How to replace front and rear Universal Joints on Ford Expedition? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace single-cardan U-joints, make sure you have a press or vise and a universal joint service kit. First, take off the driveshaft and use pliers to remove snap-rings from the spider. Then place the driveshaft on a workbench with a vise. Sockets should be used to press bearing caps out of the yoke. Fill new universal joint bearings with grease, and position the spider and caps before pressing them into place; do not forget snap-rings. Dust seals must not be damaged. Add grease and mount the driveshaft. Cardan U-joints should have rings removed and positions marked. Remove bearing caps in the center yoke and driveshaft yoke. Replace the centering ball and dust cover on the companion flange. Disassemble the center yoke and driveshaft yoke, and install new spider bearing in the driveshaft yoke. Insert new caps and seals with grease fitting facing away from the center yoke.

How to replace a universal joint in a driveshaft on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
A press or large vise will be needed for this procedure and using a relatively large charge one can take the driveshaft to the repair or machine shop for the replacement of the universal joint. Start by a removal of the driveshaft and then position the components in the engine compartment relative to the driveshaft tube for the reassembly. Remove the snap rings with the help of small pliers: put the driveshaft on an arbor press or a workbench with a vise. Fit a pipe or a large socket over one bearing cap and a slightly smaller socket on the counter part and use vise or press to force out the cap till it is half off the yoke, then use vise or pliers to remove it completely. Do the same for the other bearing cap and then for all reusable components, clean these, check that a new U-joint is replaced not in pieces of the old worn parts. Grease the new universal joint bearings with chassis grease as per any instruction given for the lubrication of the bearings. Center the spider in the yoke, screw one bearing cap partially and see that grease fitting is in an off set manner. Place the spider and thread the bearing caps into place, be very careful not to scratch the dust seals, then fit the snap rings, where a brass or plastic hammer can be used to fully seat them will. Replace the grease fitting with a new one and then pump the joint with grease, but do not over grease the joint. To deal with a double cardan U-joint, identify the positions of the spiders and yokes, then, remove the snap rings and also support the driveshaft in a like manner. As earlier, lift the bearing caps; take off the spider and centering socket yoke and wash the parts. grease the new bearings properly, place the spider and screw the bearing caps mainly with adequate regard of the dust seals. Place the snap rings on the worm shaft, the grease fitting should also be installed and the joint should also be filled with grease, the socket relief and ball should also be packed with auto chassis grease. Place the center bearing of driveshaft above the spider ends and finally fit the bearing and engage the snap rings. Last, place the centering ball on the stud and attach the driveshaft with centering socket yoke and do the same procedure for the front spider; The alignment of the flange bolts should be correct before tightening the bolts to the required torque.

    Q:
What is the role of the Drive Shaft and Universal Joint in the front of a Lincoln Navigator and how do they function? Posted by Customer
    A:
A driveshaft is the tube or tubes that move power between the transmission and differential in the rear axle. All driveshafts need universal joints at each end, and a center bearing needs one behind it on two-part driveshafts at the back. The U-joint serves as a double-hinged tool that moves power from one shaft directly to another shaft at an angle. The regular U-joint connects two shafts by fixing Y-shaped yokes at 90-degree angles, with the force passed through the sq. center bearing we call "spider." All rear driveshafts have a slip yoke at the front that lets the driveshaft move up and down inside the transmission, stopping oil leaks and keeping dirt out with a special oil seal. When a car has two separate short driveshaft pieces, a middle mounting point is located on a rubber cushion built into the vehicle frame to support the transmission and prevent dirt from entering. At the back, all rear driveshafts connect the rear axle differential pinion flange through a flange yoke held in place by four bolts that prevents leaks by using a seal. The driveshaft mainly needs little attention, with the universal joints self-lubricating for their entire lifespan before possible issues require removing the drive shaft from the car for repair. We should clean the driveshaft well and make sure small weights meant for balancing are there, checking the shaft for damage when we do. When you drive and notice a strange noise or feel vibrations, a test drive can tell you if they come from your driveshaft or another part. Checking the driveline for problems is best done if you think something is wrong.
