The Daytime Running Lights (DRL) system on certain models activates the headlights whenever the engine is running, except when the parking brake is engaged; once released, the lights stay on as long as the ignition is on, even if the parking brake is reapplied. This system provides reduced power to the headlights to prevent excessive brightness during the day while extending headlight life. The LED headlight system features six main low-beam, two supplemental low-beam, and four high-beam non-replaceable LEDs, with the turn lamp and side marker LEDs integrated into the headlight housing and not individually replaceable. Additionally, the headlight daytime running/signature light system includes an illuminated strip that shines white, with the daytime running/signature lamp LEDs also integrated into the headlight housing. The Body Control Module (BCM) monitors the headlight switch position by sending voltage signals across multiple circuits, with one circuit grounded at any time to indicate the switch position. The BCM activates the parking lights and headlights when the ignition is in the ON position, and if a fault is detected in the headlight switch or wiring, an error notification appears on the instrument cluster.

The headlight adjustment screws control up-and-down movement, while left-and-right movement is not adjustable. Several methods exist for adjusting the headlights, with the simplest requiring a blank wall 25 feet in front of the vehicle and a level floor. Position masking tape on the wall in relation to the vehicle centerline and the centerlines of both headlights. Measure the height of the headlight reference marks from the ground and position a horizontal tape line on the wall at the same height. It may be easier to position the tape on the wall with the vehicle parked only a few inches away. Adjustments should be made with the vehicle sitting level, the gas tank half-full, and no unusually heavy load present. Turn on the low beams and adjust the screw to position the high beam so it is two inches below the horizontal line. It is advisable to have the headlights adjusted by a dealer service department at the earliest opportunity.

On 2014 and earlier Edge models and all MKX models, the front bumper cover should be removed.
