To perform conventional hydraulic assist steering, start by parking the vehicle with the front wheels straight ahead. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheels and the skid plate if present. Mark the relationship of the lower steering shaft U-joint to the rack and pinion input shaft, then remove the U-joint pinch bolt and slide the U-joint off the input shaft. If it doesn't slide off completely, detach it later. Remove the oil drip tray and disconnect the pressure and return lines from the rack and pinion, discarding any O-ring seals. Disconnect the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. On 2008 and earlier models, remove the rack and pinion bracket-to-crossmember fasteners and the mounting brackets from the rack and pinion. On 2009 and later models, the rack and pinion is directly bolted to the crossmember. Remove the rack and pinion assembly through the left wheel well opening. For installation, align the match marks made earlier, tighten all suspension and rack and pinion fasteners, and use new O-rings when assembling the pressure and return lines. Finally, refill the power steering fluid reservoir with the proper fluid and bleed the power steering system. For electronic power assist steering on 2011 and later models, the rack and pinion replacement requires reprogramming with a proprietary scan tool and cannot be done at home.
