On 2011 and later models, the rack and pinion can be removed to access something else, but if it needs to be replaced, it must be done by a dealer service department or qualified repair shop because the Power Steering Control Module (PSCM) configuration must be programmed into the new rack and pinion unit for it to work properly. To remove the rack and pinion, park the vehicle with the front wheels pointing straight ahead and disconnect the battery cable. Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, and remove the wheels. Disconnect the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles. On 2010 and earlier models, remove the power steering fluid line brackets. Mark the relationship of the lower steering shaft U-joint to the rack and pinion input shaft, remove the U-joint pinch bolt, and slide the U-joint up and off the input shaft. On 2010 and earlier models, disconnect the pressure and return lines from the rack and pinion and discard the O-ring seals. On 2011 and later models, remove the starter motor and release the two connector locks, then disconnect the two Electronic Power Assist Steering (EPAS) electrical connectors. Remove the rack and pinion fasteners, making sure to discard and replace the mounting bolts with new ones on 2011 and later models. Remove the rack and pinion assembly. To install, align the matchmarks made in the previous step and tighten all suspension and rack and pinion fasteners to the specified torque. Use new O-rings when assembling the pressure and return lines to the rack and pinion. Finally, bleed the power steering system.
