To completely eliminate the components, one has to disconnect the cable on the negative terminal, drain the engine oil and coolant as well as the oil filter. Then, the expansion tank, and engine cooling fan have to be unbolted, the coolant hoses have to be disconnected from the crossover housing and for 5.0L engines, the thermostat housing bolts and housing from the front cover have to be removed. The factors of repair are removal of the drivebelt(s), water pump pulley and, for the 5.0 L engines the water pump. Go on to remove the crankshaft pulley and front oil seal so that the front cover could pivot and then the alternator and both the valve covers. Take off nut on the transmission fluid cooler line bracket and separate the bracket from the lower timing cover. If installed, then disconnect the power steering pump by using the bolts for mounting and putting it to one side. Extend the timing cover bolts, then unbolt the drivebelt tensioner and idler pulleys, including the electrical crankshaft position sensor connector and for 4.6L, camshaft position sensors. If so equipped, remove the radio ignition interference capacitors from the upper timing cover and then the four front oil pan bolts and the timing cover-to-engine block bolts; noting the locations of stud and different length bolt for reassembly. Remove the timing cover from the engine block, if required, use a soft-faced hammer being cautious not to distort the cover. Before fitting, clean the contact surfaces of the timing cover, the block and cylinder heads, then fit three new seizing gaskets onto the ribs of the timing cover. In 5.0L engines, be sure that the pulley and the VCT solenoids are flush with their mating surfaces. Use 1/8" thickness for the RTV sealant at the places: the oil pan to engine block attaching and the cylinder head to engine block joining; bits of RTV sealant where the timing cover adjoins the engine block and the cylinder head. The timing cover should be fitted within five-minute period after applying the RTV sealant and correctly positioned before the bolts are tightened in the right sequence. For the crankshaft front oil seal a new one needs to be put in then all the other parts should be replaced in the order in which they were removed. Lastly, it is appropriate to change an oil filter, fill with right type and amount of engine oil, and coolant, start the engine, and look for any sign of leakage.
