    Q:
How to remove and install the speedometer cable and casing on Ford Explorer Sport Trac? Posted by Customer
    A:
The newer speedometer controls work via vehicle sensors instead of a physical cable, starting from models built in 1997. Start by pulling the old cable from the casing. Put a new cable in by doing the reverse steps of the removal. Before replacing the speedometer casing, loosen the clamp from the firewall with a screw, then from under the vehicle remove the clamp screw and disconnect the cable from either the transmission or transfer case. Before you can mount the speedometer casing, put a new O-ring around the connector between the head and the transmission, then join the two together. When replacing speedometers, have their odometer match the mileage of the one you took off. Unscrew the three pieces of the instrument cluster, starting with the lens, then mask. To set the speedometer free, press lightly on its backcase to unstick it from the connecting arms in the gauge holder. Carefully lift and rock the gauge panel off the holder, remembering to remove the side gauges first. To install the speedometer, put back on the same parts in reverse order: begin by taking 3/16-inch diameter silicone grease and putting a ball in the speedometer head drive hole if your car has a speedometer cable.

    Q:
How to remove and install a speedometer cable on Ford Ranger? Posted by Customer
    A:
Later model vehicles are equipped with electronic speedometers and do not have a speedometer cable. To remove the cable only, pull out the cable core from the casing and install a new one by reversing the removal steps. To remove the casing, first remove the screw and clamp securing the speedometer cable to the firewall. Then, working under the vehicle, remove the clamp screw and take out the cable and casing from the transmission or transfer case. Connect the speedometer casing to the head and, if removed, install the casing to the transmission using a new O-ring. Finally, install the instrument cluster.
