The accumulator/drier is responsible for storing refrigerant and removing moisture from the air conditioning system. It needs to be replaced whenever a major component of the system is replaced or if the system has been exposed to air for a significant amount of time. To remove the accumulator/drier, take the vehicle to a dealer service department or automotive air conditioning shop to have the system discharged and disconnect the cable at the negative battery terminal. Then, disconnect the electrical connector at the compressor clutch cycling switch on top of the accumulator/drier. Next, disconnect the refrigerant inlet and outlet lines using the appropriate tools and cap or plug the open lines immediately. Remove the nut from the mounting bracket and slide the accumulator/drier assembly out. If replacing the accumulator/drier, drain the refrigerant oil from the old one and add the same amount plus two ounces of clean refrigerant oil to the new accumulator. Place the new accumulator/drier into position, lubricate the O-rings, and reconnect the inlet and outlet lines. Finally, tighten the clamp bolt securely, reconnect the electrical connector, and connect the cable to the negative battery terminal. The system should then be evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by a professional.
