- Q: How to remove and install a fender on a Mercury Mariner?A:Loosen the front wheel lug nuts. Raise the vehicle, support it securely on jackstands and remove the front wheel(s). Remove the headlight housing. Remove the inner fender splash shield. The fender is fastened using either mounting screws or pin-type fasteners. Remove the side marker lights, if equipped. If you're removing the passenger side fender, remove the radio antenna. If you're removing the driver side fender, remove the hood prop rod from the fender and prop the hood open. For 4WD models, remove the fender molding and the rocker panel molding. The rocker panel molding must be released from inside the door panel. Remove the door trim panel. The molding retainer clips are not reusable. Install new clips on reassembly. For all models, remove the lower fender to body bolts. Open the front door and remove the upper fender to body bolt. Remove the remaining fender mounting bolts. Lift off the fender. It's a good idea to have an assistant support the fender while it's being moved away from the vehicle to prevent damage to the surrounding body panels. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the alignment of the fender to the hood and front edge of the door before final tightening of the fender fasteners. Remove the front bumper cover. Remove the inner fender splash shield. On vehicles with rocker panel moldings, remove the screws from the front wheel wells, then remove the running boards, if equipped. Use a plastic trim tool or a screwdriver wrapped with tape to carefully pry off the rocker molding, starting from one end and working down its length. The rocker molding clips must be replaced with new ones on Installation. Remove the rocker molding. If you're working on a right fender, remove the antenna mast and the grommet at its base. Remove the two bolts at the lower rear edge of the fender. Open the door, then remove the bolt at the top rear. Remove the two bolts behind the headlight. Remove the three bolts along the top edge from the engine compartment. Carefully lift off the fender. The fender must be lifted over the antenna base. Installation is the reverse of removal. Check the alignment of the fender to the hood and the front edge of the door before final tightening of the bolts.
