Mercury Lynx Rocker Arm

The Mercury Lynx Rocker Arm changes the rotational push of the camshaft into the up-and-down movements that open and close each valve, maintaining good breathing and steady power. The early designs made use of a Rocker Arm made from stamped steel which was mounted on a stud. In this design, the pushrod lifted one side of the arm and then pressed down on the valve stem on the opposite side. This simplicity of design offered a good trade-off in low cost and solid durability for average Mercury drivers. As expectations continued to rise, later releases of the Mercury Lynx underwent a switch to roller-tipped and full-roller Rocker Arm systems, which introduce needle bearings at the tip and pivot to slash friction and reduce wear to allow a higher engine spin before valve float threatens. Although both systems have the same purpose, they manage friction differently. Similarly, their weight and stability at high RPM differ too. This gives modern Lynx engines better throttle response. It is important that the lash on each Rocker Arm be kept in specification because excessive clearance allows the parts to slam together, which can bend pushrods or crack a Rocker Arm. Such failures can rob a Mercury Lynx of power very quickly.

Mercury Lynx Rocker Arm Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the Camshaft and Rocker Arm on Mercury Lynx?
    A:
To replace the valve cover; the following step is followed, Remove the battery negative cable and the crankcase ventilation hose from the intake manifold and the valve cover. Disconnect the throttle cable and take out the air cleaner. Next, take out the bolts and disconnect the valve cover, this is also a good time to make sure old gasket material is scraped off both the surfaces and to wipe down the area with a rag and a little lacquer thinner or acetone. If the valve cover gasket is of the non-sealed variety, replace it with a new one; on the other hand, if RTV sealant was applied before, remove this and apply a new ring to the mating surface; ensure that the inside of the bolt holes is covered as well. For camshaft, lifters, rocker arms, first, remove the valve cover and if they are not restricted from the other components unbolt the fuel pump if applicable. Take off the distributor cap and put it aside, next unscrew the rocker arms, fulcrums and lifter guide retainers and retain all the components in order. Remove the hydraulic lifters, and the drive belts, ignition coil and the Timing Belt, where necessary. Remove the lock and then slacken the sprocket bolt before unbolt the thrust plate to remove the camshaft gently. For all of the lifters look for wear and whorl on the roller lifters & check the rocker arms for wear on the contact points, and replace them with new ones if worn out. Wear check should be made on the camshaft lobes and measure also the bearing journals and bearing surfaces on the same camshaft should also be measured with the specification. For installation it is imperative to conduct the following, lubricant the camshaft bearing surfaces, fit a new oil seal, apply the thread locking compound to the sprocket bolt and finally check the timing belt. Coat the hydraulic lifters with oil before fitting them and reinstall the rocker arms one by one making sure that the hydraulic lifters are located properly before tightening the nuts.
