Mercury Lynx Headlight Switch

The Mercury Lynx Headlight Switch is the driver's main control for exterior lights, enabling the vehicle to pierce through darkness and send messages. Mounted on the dashboard or steering-column stalk, this Headlight Switch toggles parking, low, and high-beam lamps, with many versions adding an automatic function to turn on the lights when outside brightness dims. The early Lynx applied a simple rotary dash knob while later subcompact Mercury models applied the stalk style with multifunction Headlight Switch, turn-signal, and high-beam dimmer actions. In the rotary form, you twist to select parking or headlight position, plus pull for courtesy illumination. The stalk design instead makes use of clicks forward or rearward for steady or flash high-beam use. It's quicker access with the fingertip, without leaving the wheel. No matter the style, each of these Headlight Switches sends power to the instrument panel backlighting. Many of them house a rheostat that brightens and dims the gauges to help keep the driver's eyes on the road in the rain or at night. The Headlight Switch prevents dark-road surprises when working correctly. The proper maintenance preserves factory reliability that drivers expect from Mercury's long-lasting Lynx line. The Headlight Switch is essential for safe driving.

Mercury Lynx Headlight Switch Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the headlight switch on the Mercury Lynx?
    A:
Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. For non-air conditioned models, remove the two screws securing the left-hand air vent control cable bracket and drop the cable and bracket down. Remove the two screws securing the fuse panel and move the fuse panel aside. Pull the headlamp switch to the On position. Reach under the instrument panel and press the knob release button to remove the knob and shaft assembly. Remove the switch retaining nut and partially take out the switch from the instrument panel. Disconnect the electrical connector from the switch and remove the switch. Installation is the reverse of removal.
