How to disconnect and remove the speedometer cable on Mercury Grand Marquis?

On the later models the speedometer is electrical, a signal being sent to it by the Vehicle Speed Sensor(VSS), this does away with the mechanical speedometer cable. The first step is to unplug the cable from the negative terminal of the battery then follow it up by removing the speedometer cable from the transmission system or the cruise control adapter. Proceeding with the installation, it is necessary to take out the cable from the routing clips in the engine compartment and pull it upward to gain the necessary amount of free length for the disconnection of the speedometer. Next remove the screws holding the instrument cluster, remove the cluster and releasing the speedometer cable from back of the cluster by pressing on its cable release tab. Therefore, after the removal of the cable from the vehicle it is recommended to apply a lump of silicone of 3/16 inch into the speedometer opening and reversing the process of removal to apply the cable.
