How to replace a fuel pump on Mercury Capri?

To replace a mechanical fuel pump on carburetor equipped models, start by loosening the threaded fuel line fittings at the pump with the proper size wrench. Retighten them until they're snug. Do not remove the lines yet. Loosen the mounting bolts and use your hands to loosen the pump from the block. If it's stuck, have an assistant operate the starter while you keep one hand on the pump. Disconnect the fuel lines from the pump using a backup wrench. Remove the fuel pump bolts and detach the pump and gasket. Clean the engine block and pump mating surfaces. Insert the bolts through the pump and place the new gasket in position. Position the fuel pump on the block and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Attach the fuel lines to the pump and check for fuel leaks. For electric in-tank fuel pump on fuel-injected models, relieve the fuel system pressure and remove the fuel tank. Tap the lock ring counterclockwise until it's loose. Pull the fuel pump/sending unit assembly from the tank and remove the old lock ring gasket. Clean the fuel pump mounting flange and the tank mounting surface. Installation is the reverse of removal. For electric chassis-mount fuel pump on fuel-injected models, depressurize the fuel system and raise the vehicle. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the inlet and outlet lines from the fuel pump. Remove the fuel pump from the assembly and the electrical wiring harness. When installing, make sure the fittings on the pump have gaskets in place and are properly positioned. Wrap the fuel pump retaining ring around the fuel pump and insert it into the bracket. Connect the fuel lines and the electrical harness connector. Start the vehicle, check for proper operation of the pump, and look for leaks.
