How to properly replace the Neutral Safety Switch on the Mercury Cougar?

First, engage the shift lever into Low and then, using lifting mechanism, lift the vehicle until it is resting on jackstands. Then unfasten the ground terminal on the battery and take off the electrical connection of the neutral start switch. Retrieve the switch and O-ring with the appropriate Ford socket tool T74P-77247-A since the switch is sensitive and should be handled carefully when fitted. After that, the new switch with the help of new O-ring should be installed according to the torque with the help of Ford tool without the pressure on the switch walls to avoid damaging them, crushing or puncturing them. Screw back the electrical connector giving certain that it is not wound up tight if the tool is not present. Last, connect the negative battery terminal and ensure the engine starts only with selector in Neutral and Park.
