To remove the rear coil spring on most models, loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it on jackstands. Remove the wheels and block the front wheels. Remove the rear stabilizer bar and support the axle assembly with a jack. Disconnect the
Shock Absorbers and height sensor connector link. On 1998 and later models, disconnect the lateral arms. Lower the jack, remove the safety chain, coil spring, and insulators. For installation, set the upper insulator on the spring, place the spring between its seat on the axle tube and the frame seat, raise the axle assembly, and insert the studs on the shocks into their brackets. Install the stud retaining nuts, snap the brake cable into the upper suspension arm retainer, reinstall the stabilizer bar, and connect the height sensor connector link. Install the wheels, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts. For 1982-1987 Continentals and 1984-1992 Mark Vlls, the process is similar but involves using a floor jack under the lower suspension arm axle pivot bolt.
