Lincoln Continental Power Steering Pump Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to replace the power steering pump pulley on Lincoln Continental?
A: On 1998 and later models, the power steering pump pulley must be replaced after two installations. Check the pulley for paint marks after removing it. If it has no marks on it, make one and reuse the pulley. If it has one paint mark on it, make a second mark and reuse the pulley. If the pulley already has two marks on it, it should be replaced with a new pulley. Relieve tension on the accessory drivebelt. On some models, the pump can be accessed from above. On others, raise the front of the vehicle and place it securely on jackstands. Locate the pump on the left (driver's) side of the engine block. Disconnect the fluid return hose from the pump and drain the fluid from the pump reservoir. Disconnect the pressure hose from the pump, but do NOT unscrew the pressure fitting itself. Plug the lines to prevent contamination. Models from 1997 on have an electrical connector for the variable assist steering. Disconnect this electrical connector before removing the pump. On some engines, the pump is mounted on a bracket bolted to the engine. You'll have to remove the pulley before you can remove the pump-to-bracket mounting bolts. A special puller for this purpose is available at most auto parts stores. On other engines, the pump is mounted directly on the block, so the pulley doesn't cover up the mounting bolts. On these models, it's easier to remove the pulley on the bench after you've removed the pump assembly. Remove the pump mounting bolts and remove the pump. Installation is the reverse of the above procedure. On some engines, you'll need a special pulley installer tool to install the pulley once the pump is bolted to its mounting bracket. Install the accessory drivebelt or the serpentine belt. Install the pressure and return lines and fill the reservoir with an approved fluid. Start the engine and turn the steering wheel from lock to lock several times to distribute the fluid, then recheck the fluid level and top-off if necessary. Bleed the power steering system.
