Ford Thunderbird A/C Compressor Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to remove and replace the compressor in a Ford Thunderbird?
A: Ford recommends replacing the orifice tube and accumulator whenever the compressor is replaced. To remove the compressor, first have the air conditioning system discharged and disconnect the negative battery cable. Then, disconnect the compressor clutch wiring harness and remove the drivebelt. Disconnect the refrigerant lines from the rear of the compressor, either by using a special tool for "spring lock" type couplings or by unbolt the lines. Make sure to plug the open fittings to prevent dirt and moisture from entering. Unbolt the compressor from the mounting brackets and lift it out of the vehicle. If installing a new compressor, follow the directions for draining excess oil. When installing, replace any O-rings with new ones made for the purpose and lubricate them with refrigerant oil. Finally, have the system evacuated, recharged, and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
