All models contain the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) which is known as the Airbag System, as it is programmed to protect the driver and the front seat passenger in case of head-on or frontal impact. This system comprises of impact sensing devices, driver side air bag module installed on the side of the steering wheel, passenger side air bag module installed in the glove box and sensing diagnostic module at the center console floor. The models come equipped with side curtain air bags and seat belt pre-tensioners. The driver 's airbag inflator module is located in the steering wheel; the bag inflates almost as soon as it receives an electrical signal through spiral cable assembly. New features are the expanded passenger air bag located above the glove box with a larger and a textured plastic trim over it which opens out when the air bag is deployed. The side-curtain shields the passengers' heads when they are opened by triggering from the headliner during side collisions. Sensing & Diagnostic Module controls the deployment of air bag during an accident and tests the system when the vehicle is powered up, and 'AIR BAG' light turns on if working well. Some models install pyrotechnic units into the retractors of the seat belts to tighten the belts whener there is an impact. It is necessary to disable the airbag system where the technician, mechanic or any person is near the steering wheel or SRS components and to do so, several procedures should be followed. It is wise not to re- arm the system when people are still in the automotive and to adhere certain guidelines on how to reconnect the battery and the airbag light should it be connected. Some precautions when working with airbag modules are as follows Do not let the opening of the airbag be near the operator's body Do not measure the resistance of the SRS components. also electrical welding should not be done in cars having an air bag because the air bag connectors have to be disconnected, and the live air bag modules should be taken back to a qualified service department and scrapped. When the driver's side airbag module and spiral cable are required to be removed and installed, there are certain laid down procedures, though for the passenger airbag module, it can remain intact when carrying out the instrument panel remove and replace process, but air bag work is best left for professionals.
