Chock the front wheels and engage 1st gear or P. Loosen the wheel nuts on the relevant rear wheel, then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands, fully releasing the parking brake lever. Unclip the boot from around the hand-brake lever and remove it. Remove the locking nut and loosen the parking brake adjusting nut. Working beneath the vehicle, unbolt the exhaust heat shield(s) from the underbody and move them along the exhaust to gain access to the cables. If necessary, release the exhaust system from the rubber mountings and lower it as far as possible, supporting it on blocks or more axle stands. Remove the relevant rear wheel and unclip the parking brake outer cable from its retaining clips. Turn the cable through 90 degrees to unhook it from the equalizer bar and lever the plastic cable guide from its bracket. On vehicles with ABS, disconnect the brake system sensor. Unclip the parking brake cable from the sleeve in front of the
Brake Drum; on some models, it may be necessary to remove the rear brake shoes on the relevant side and then compress the retaining lugs to push the cable through. Unbolt the outer cable guide from the tie-bar and disconnect it from its retaining clip, then withdraw the cable from beneath the vehicle. For installation, reverse the removal procedure while adjusting the cable, ensuring that the cable end fittings are correctly located, and check the operation of the parking brake to confirm that both wheels are locked and then free to turn when the parking brake is operated.
