Ford Fairmont Instrument Cluster

The Instrument Cluster of a Ford Fairmont allows the driver to get a centralized view of the speed, engine revs, fuel level, and warning lights. That will help the driver immediately know the status of the vehicle and the different levels being operated under. The Instrument Cluster, which is mounted behind the steering wheel, groups the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, and indicator lamps so Ford drivers can check data without looking away. The early Fairmont automobiles came with an analog Instrument Cluster. This cluster featured sweep needles and basic bulbs. Later Fairmont sedans received a revised analog instrument panel. This instrument panel had pictogram alerts but similar dial movement. The Instrument Cluster of every year's Ford design was kept simple through the use of back lighting and logical gauge placement to ensure minimal distraction. The updated Fairmont iteration maintains its analog style needles but does introduce sharper graphics and larger seatbelt and lamp icons in comparison to the first style. For many years now, the Instrument Cluster serves the same purpose, immediately reporting speed, engine health, fuel level, and system warnings so the Ford driver can react fast. This means that anyone who is familiar with an older model can easily adjust behind the wheel of the updated vehicle to read the dials at a glance.

Ford Fairmont Instrument Cluster Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to remove and install the instrument cluster in a Ford Fairmont?
    A:
To remove and install the instrument cluster in a vehicle, start by disconnecting the battery negative cable. Then, remove the steering column shroud and the cluster trim cover. Next, detach the PRND21 cable from the shift cane and remove the plastic clamp from around the steering column. After that, remove the screws holding the instrument cluster to the instrument panel and disconnect the speedometer cable. Disconnect the cluster electrical plug from the printed circuit and lift the cluster away from the dash panel. When installing, apply silicone damping grease in the speedometer head drive hole. Connect the electrical feed plug to the printed circuit and push the cable onto the speedometer with a twisting motion. Place the cluster back in position on the instrument panel and secure it with the retaining screws. Install the plastic PRND21 cable clamp around the steering column, ensuring the clamp locater pin is engaged in the slot. Adjust the cable clamp until the indicator pointer is centered on "D" while the transmission selector is in the "Drive" position. Finally, tighten the clamp screw and reconnect the battery negative cable.
