Ford Expedition Torsion Bar

The Ford Expedition Torsion Bar is a twist spring that helps maintain ride height and steering stability. It also enables easy front-end leveling with a wrench. Fitted lengthwise, the Torsion Bar attaches on one end to the frame and on the other to a keyed lever on the lower control arm, allowing wheel travel to twist the bar rather than compress a coil. The lightweight and compact design of each Torsion Bar allows additional space underneath the SUV and has a preload bolt that enables owners to raise, lower, or equalize stance with no component changes needed. A properly optimized Torsion Bar assists in maintaining Ford front wheel alignment when cornering. The early Expedition models had softer, single-rate Torsion Bar aimed at a smooth commute, whereas later versions get stronger high-rate options that are forged and heat treated to carry heavier cargo and survive rough terrain. The later versions have better bottoming resistance as they have a higher torsional stiffness. Subsequent versions of the Expedition maintained their celebrity status. By frequently inspecting for bends or cracks and checking to see if the rubber mounts are worn, it allows the Ford suspension to stay precise and helps every Ford Expedition stay confident on road and trail.

Ford Expedition Torsion Bar Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: How to perform torsion bar adjustment on Ford Expedition?
    A:
If there is an air suspension system, switch it off to adjust the torsion bar. To loosen lug nuts, raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. Take off the wheel and mark the position of the torsion bar. Using a puller, release tension and remove the adjustment nut. Slide forward to clear the cross member and remove the adjuster arm from the bar. Pull down and rearward on the torsion bar. If necessary, use brass drift to take it out. For installation purposes, lubricate the Control Arm and apply grease to parts of the adjuster and torsion bar. Align marks then reinstall the wheel. Lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts then measure ride height. Adjust the torsion bar until the vehicle sits levelly.
