- Q: How do you remove and replace the fuel level sending unit on Ford Excursion?A:Newer diesel models include their own fuel level sensor located inside the Fuel Tank as well as an externally located Fuel Pump and hence, to access the fuel level sensor assembly, the entire fuel tank has to be removed. In the subsequent models, the fuel level sensor is incorporated into the fuel pump module, and as such is not replaceable separately. To continue, first pull the fuel tank and then very gently, take out the fuel pump and fuel level sensor without lifting the float at the under side. After that, remove the electrical connectors for the fuel level sensor or unscrew the sensor from the fuel pump. Removal is done in the reverse order of installation and preferably, a new rubber gasket must be fitted in place.
