Ford Crown Victoria Turn Signal Flasher

The Turn Signal Flasher for the Ford Crown Victoria keeps your sedan's indicator lamps blinking at a steady, attention-grabbing rhythm, so nearby drivers are always clued in when you plan to turn or merge. In the early models of Crown Victoria, a Turn Signal Flasher was a thermal device that would turn on and off a circuit by sensing the heat that flexed a metal strip. As such, the bulbs would flash and the flasher made a mechanical clicking sound. Later models of the Crown Victoria incorporated a solid-state Turn Signal Flasher that depends on transistors and a timing chip to provide a quick and precise pulse. This design also works well with low current LED bulbs. Both types serve the same purpose, but the electronic unit is far less affected by temperature changes, allows for additional lights, and typically lasts longer than the older type. When the signal stalk sends power, the chosen Turn Signal Flasher receives a metered current for the lamps to ensure the indicators and hazards flash at the correct cadence. In the event that your flashing ceases or locks on, you may restore safe operation simply by replacing the Turn Signal Flasher with an original Ford specification unit. Every Ford Crown Victoria still depends on this handy, compact device.

Ford Crown Victoria Turn Signal Flasher Parts Questions & Experts Answers

  • Q: What is the function and replacement process of the turn signal flasher on Ford Crown Victoria?
    A:
On prior models to 1996 the turn signal flasher is a small canister shaped unit in the main interior Fuse panel which when engaged lights up the turn signal lights. In later models, this function is performed by an SLLC located below and to the right of the steering column, and in these cases flasher canister cannot be removed or replaced; testing of the module and its circuit is suggested to be made by an electrical service shop. A functioning flasher unit will click, and if turn signals don't work on one side and give the clicking noise, or if they blink faster than normal, it could be a bad bulb. If neither of the turn signals blinks then possible problems may be a fused out flasher unit, a defective switch or a loose connection; one should check the fuse block for turn signal fuse and electrical connections for shorts before replacing the fuse. To remove the flasher, it is pulled out of the fuse block, and before inserting the new unit, it should be as that of the original flasher, the procedure of removal being the reverse of implementation. In the same way, the hazard flasher, a small canister shaped unit that is found in the main interior fuse panel up to models produced up to 1996, works like the turn signal: the later models were fitted with a solid-state lighting control module. The hazard flasher can be replaced by pulling it from the back of the fuse block, replacement unit must be of the same type as the removed unit and installation process is a reverse of removal process.
