Ford Bronco Brake Disc Parts Questions & Answers

  • Q: How to replace the front brake rotor?
A: To replace the front brake disc, begin by removing the front caliper assembly without disconnecting the brake hose. Inspect both sides of the disc for deep scratches, scoring over 0.015 inches deep, cracks, or breakage. If any of these conditions are present, the disc must be removed for refinishing or replacement at a specialized shop. Light scratches and shallow grooves are usually not problematic, but if there are signs of wobbling or a pulsating pedal, measure the disc runout using a dial indicator. Attach the indicator's base to a stable part of the suspension, with the stylus touching the disc's surface about 1/2 inch from the outer edge. Slowly rotate the disc through one revolution and note the high and low readings on the dial, which represent the total disc runout. If the runout exceeds the maximum specification, the disc should be machined or replaced. Check the disc thickness at several locations using a micrometer, ensuring it does not go below the minimum refinish thickness dimension cast into the inner surface. For 2WD vehicles, the disc removal and installation for resurfacing is addressed in the initial procedures. 4WD vehicles with a two-piece hub and disc simply require the disc to be slid off and on the hub assembly. 4WD vehicles with an integral disc and hub require additional attention to hub removal, installation, and bearing adjustment. Following the disc readiness, install the Brake Caliper and Brake Pads. Proceed with wheel(s) and lug nuts installation, lower the vehicle to the ground, and tighten the lug nuts to the torque specification. Ensure careful brake operation checks before returning the vehicle to normal service.
