The manufacturer recommends replacing the fuel lines whenever they are removed. On 1.5L and 1.6L engines, the high-pressure fuel pump is mounted on a separate drive housing on the top of the cylinder head, while on 2.0L engines, it is mounted on the end of the cylinder head, and on 2.7L engines, it is located at the left end of the rear cylinder head. To begin removal, relieve the fuel system pressure and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal. For four-cylinder engines, lift the engine cover off the ballstuds and remove it, then take out the ignition coils for the 1.5L and 1.6L engines. Remove the air filter housing outlet duct for the 1.6L and 2.0L engines, disconnect the crankcase vent pipe quick-connect fitting from the turbocharger inlet pipe for the 1.6L engines, and disconnect the electrical connectors for all wiring that shares the harness with the fuel injectors, followed by disconnecting the four fuel injector electrical connectors. Remove the insulator fasteners and insulator from the top of the valve cover, then disconnect the fuel injection pump electrical connector and carefully remove the pump insulator if equipped. Disconnect the quick disconnect line and remove the fuel line to the fuel pump, then loosen and remove the fuel lines using a flare nut wrench, noting that the manufacturer recommends replacing the high-pressure fuel line whenever it is removed. Slide the heater hose clip forward and up to expose the fuel pump shield bolts, remove the shield bolts and shield, then loosen the fuel pump bolts, alternating one turn at a time until the bolts and pump can be removed, ensuring to replace the bolts after removal. Caution is advised as the fuel pump is under extreme pressure; if the bolts are not loosened evenly, damage may occur. Remove and discard the fuel pump O-ring. For the 2.7L V6 engine, remove the intake manifold, locate the high-pressure fuel pump, disconnect the electrical connector, and disconnect the fuel supply hose quick-connect fitting at the pump. Remove and discard the fuel feed line between the high-pressure fuel pump and fuel rail, ensuring to obtain a new feed line for installation. Remove the bolt attaching the fuel feed pipe to the intake manifold, loosen the fuel feed line fitting at the high-pressure fuel pump, and alternately loosen the two nuts attaching the high-pressure fuel pump to the valve cover until removed. Carefully pull the high-pressure fuel pump out of the cylinder head, and if necessary, remove the high-pressure fuel pump tappet, noting the installation orientation during removal. Before installing the fuel injection pump, check the pump tappet in the pump body for wear or damage, install a new O-ring on the pump, and apply clean oil to the pump tappet and the O-ring. Rotate the engine clockwise until the cam lobe for the fuel injection pump is at its lowest point, then set the pump in the housing and install the new bolts hand tight. Tighten the bolts in even stages, alternating between them, to the specified torque, and complete the installation in reverse order of removal.
