To remove the exhaust manifold, park the vehicle on firm, level ground, apply the handbrake, jack up the front, and support it on axle stands. From under the vehicle, unscrew the two retaining nuts to disconnect the exhaust system front down-pipe from the manifold, then undo the bolts to remove the exhaust manifold lower retaining bracket. Detach the exhaust manifold and gasket, taking care not to damage any components during removal. For models with the PZEV 2.0L engine, unbolt and set aside the power steering pump and other components to remove the exhaust manifold/converter from the top. When inspecting, use a scraper to remove old gasket material and carbon deposits without scratching the surfaces, and check for warpage if the gasket was leaking. Ensure both mating surfaces are clean and flat, as a new gasket will suffice for a gas-tight joint without the use of exhaust sealant upstream of the catalytic converter. For installation, follow the reverse of the removal procedure, fitting a new manifold gasket, tightening the nuts to the specified torque, using a new gasket for the front pipe if applicable, and replacing any nuts used during disassembly.
